I started the functions topic with my S4 credit class on Friday (crazy that we leave it ’til now to formally introduce the notion of a function) and I came across this web comic today. Kismet.
I wonder if any of the class will be able to follow the explanation?

My feeling is that the Eee PC needs a touch screen to be the perfect 1-1 device. The chat online is that this is coming soon, for very little extra money, so I’ve been exploring how we migh use it, with the help of my wee Volito graphics tablet.
I installed the excellent open source xournal and plugged in the tablet. The Eee recognised the tablet immediately, and I rattled off a quick quadratic equation. Xournal can export to pdf, so you can see that here or just look at the screenshot (click on the screenshot for full size image):

Today and tomorrow, the S1 cohort at North Berwick High School are all spending a couple of hours in groups working outdoors on some mathematical problem solving activities. Today’s sessions all went really well - thank to Liz Brookes for organizing the activities, and making it out to North Berwick despite car problems! Liz took some photos, so hopefully I’ll have something to post here tomorrow.

These videos sites have some interesting educational stuff in amongst the copyright clips and shots of people hurting themselves. The first 6 minutes of this clip from Google video would be useful as revision for my S3 credit class:
and this one from YouTube (not viewable in East Lothian schools I’m afraid) is good revision for an S4 general class:
There are hundreds if not thousands of these videos. You could probably put together a complete set of revision clips for every Scottish maths course if you so desired ![]()

Yes, I really exist!
1 Comment Published November 22nd, 2006 in Blog, Blogging, Education, mathematicsSome students writing a maths scribe-post blog in…. well actually, I’m not sure where! Canada or USA I guess…are having trouble believing that a Scottish maths teacher called Mr Jones really exists, and is posting comments on their excellent posts.
Well, Sophie, I’m real
You can read their blog at http://prepcalcabb0607.blogspot.com/
It has lots of stuff that would be useful for higher or advanced higher pupils here in Scotland.
